
Founded in Japan in 1946 Sony (originally called the Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo Company) is a true success story in the electronics industry. The founders Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita initially made a living by repairing radios but quickly moved into manufacturing by creating the first automatic rice cooker.
Building on quality and reliability Sony quickly expanded into portable radios, TV and other electronics and is now one of the largest Electrical and Media Businesses in the world with 2008 Revenues nearing $80bn.
In-house R&D, design and manufacturing have aided product development and allowed it to be innovative in the technologies it develops. Working either on its own or closely with partners it has been responsible for pushing CDs, DVDs Blu-ray disks plus many other technologies whilst developing its own range of products and brands in support.

Marketed under the Sony Handycam brand, Sony has excelled in making small, High-Tech and reliable video cameras. Incorporating high-end optics, sound quality and recoding media have made the Sony Handycam hard to beat. The latest models include HD recording to Flash Memory.
Once leading the market in portable music players Sony lost ground to Apple when it continued to push MiniDiscs players at the expense of developing MP3 Players. They have done a total U-turn and are now releasing good quality MP3 players, all under the Walkman Brand. Features included across the range of MP3 Players include Sony Clear Audio Technologies, Integrated Digital Noise Cancelling (DNC), ATL (Automatic Level Control), S-Master Digital Amplifier, Clear Bass, Clear Stereo and Sony's proprietary Content Transfer software.
One of the first manufacturers of digital cameras Sony has developed a cool range of cameras under the Cyber-shot brand. From simple point and shoot to professional DSLR Sony has created a range that will satisfy most needs.
Under the Sony S-Frame brand a range of aesthetically pleasing digital photo frames have been created. As would be expected from Sony the picture quality is generally outstanding and on-board features include the ability to auto touch-up images ie red eye, without the need for a PC.
More of an accessory than a product line in its own right, Sony has developed a range of high quality printers for those moments when you need to quickly print photos for family members or friends. Whilst not as fast as standard printed the convenience factor and print quality easily make up the difference.
Sony has build its reputation on sound and images and their range of TVs over the last 20 years has been one of the main products associated with the brand. From the early Trinitron TVs utilising cathode ray tubes the technology has advanced significantly and the Sony Bravia branded range leads the market in many areas. The latest Bravia models show full High Definition (HD) pictures, smooth images with MotionFlow, can incorporate up to 3 digital TV tuners (Freeview or Freesat), add SDDS (Sony Dynamic Digital Sound) sound, DNLA home networking all included in an ultra slim case.

Built around the Sony Vaio brand their range of laptops contain an incredible level of technology. From X-Black LCD screens, Solid State Drives (SSD), Everywair 3G to Blu-ray drives all packed into slick designed cases. The professional range includes increased security options with its (TPM) Trusted Platform Mobile, fingerprint Recognition, shock protection and more robust bodies.
Pushing the boundaries of home entertainment Sony's Blu-ray technology (gives 10x the sound quality and 5x the picture quality of a normal DVD) allows you to watch High Definition picture quality and experience full surround sound quality. Incorporating Sony's design and quality skills with Ericsson's expertise in mobile technology a range of phones has been launched since their integration in 2001. Some models are now incorporating technology and ideas from the Walkman and CyberShot brands.

Utilising the latest 'E Ink' Vizplex display technology allows images to be read as though on paper and remain displayed wthout power.
